Disappointed

Reviewer: Stephen Scrupps,
I have had several Sony clock radios in the past and liked them all. This was my latest and when i first got it I thought it looked very smart. However, once I started using it I was disappointed. Rather than give up on it though I thought I would give it a while to get used to it. Now 6 months later I am looking for a new clock radio. The issues:

1) It has 3 brightness settings. Even on the lowest it is quite bright at night - but just about acceptable. The problem then though is that it is not bright enough to see during the day!

2) Too complicated - if you set your alarms and then never touch them again it is OK. However, if you wake up before your alarm goes off and then want to switch it off so that it does not wake your partner, forget it!

3) Lots of buttons on the top - nearly impossible to use when in bed. You end up tilting the clock radio back and forth to try and see what you are doing

4) DAB radio - the wire type arial is not sufficient to get a DAB quality signal (in my area anyway)

But I must admit - it does look nice!

Reviewer: J Firewall,
Looks good and does the job but experienced a high-pitched hum eminating from the plug. The lack of previous references to this does make me wonder whether my hearing is just too good or whether this is a faulty unit.
Does as it says on the box

Received the delivery prompt and actually before they said it would arrive. Opened the box plugged it in and within minutes it was working perfect. Found it no problem to set up, just followed the instructions. Love the way you can set the sleep timer in increments of 15 minutes, and find the clarity and quality of sound to be very good.
Not the quality I expect from Sony

Reviewer: stevpat,
The sound level is too low and reception is not the best. It keeps losing its signal no way to stop this I would not recommend if you are a heavy sleeper. I feel you may not wake up as sound level not high enough.
best alarm clock radio

I bought this clock radio three years ago as it was the best looking model available - and also because I've always found Sony to be the most reliable and long lasting brand. This radio has proved to be as good as any I have owned, with good tone and no distortion at high or low volume.

I was a little anxious when I read the reviews but I've always assumed that the random alarms mentioned by other reviewers were due to them not reading or following the instruction booklet. My alarm has never gone off unexpectedly. You really do need to read the instructions thoroughly though, as it is quite complicated to use until you get the hang of it.

I like the fact that there are four alarm settings available. This means that I can set it to come on for particular programmes in addition to my normal wake-up call.

Reception is not always good on FM in our area and I keep hoping that manufacturers will produce better aerials (or provide an external socket) so that I do not have to attach my wire to something to get a better signal.

This arrived in good time and well packed. It is a very good machine, but complicated. This is why I have given it only 3 stars. I have not been able to set the alarm to go off when I want it to. It has several alarms and it would seem that you can choose weekly, week-ends, etc, but I want to be able to go to bed, select an alarm time for the next morning of 0600 only, quickly and easily; I haven't fathomed how to do this yet. Perhaps I should invite a 10 year old to help!!!!!!!!!!
It's just 'ok'.... didn't blow me away!

Replaced my 23 year old Sony clock radio with........ a Sony clock radio. Sometimes I wish I were a little less predictable. Anyway.... I was looking for something compact, stylish and a little better quality than your bog standard offering. The first two boxes are ticked - compact it is, and depending on your view point, I think a little stylish. Sound quality is ok, reception for DAB no better than average, but my main gripe surrounds the cheap plastic buttons which feels like I am using Fisher Price's latest output rather than an supposedly upmarket offering. In another 23 years I might switch brand...... then again...........
Very Disappointing

I bought this clock radio a few months ago and was initially disappointed so have waited to see if my experience would improve over time. Unfortunately, it hasn't.

I have 3 gripes with the unit.

Firstly, it is overly complex to use. If all you want to do is to change the time for your alarm to go off, it involves scanning thru various options using different buttons and often missing an option and having to go back to square one and repeating the process all over again. I'm no fuddy-duddy when it comes to technology, I have all the latest gadgets and have no problems using them, but this unit is simply over-engineered and is absolutely not an intutitive system to use. The buttons are also positioned on top so any adjustment to the radio or clock whilst lying in bed requires tipping the unit forward to see the buttons, then back to see what effect clicking them has, before tipping forward again to select a different button and repeating the process for some time until you make the change you wanted. Poor design makes even simple adjustments annoying.

Secondly, it intermittantly picks up the signal from my mobile phone, so it randomly barks out the annoying ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba noise a mobile phone makes when placed near a radio (or other phone). I realise that radios and mobiles don't like each other, but it happens even when the radio is switched off! I therefore have to sleep with my mobile phone on the far side of my bed, rather than within reaching distance next to the clock.

Thirdly, and perhaps most annoyingly, it hisses... When the radio is switched off and I've settled down for the night, it emits a quiet, but noticeable, hiss from the speaker. It is continuous and just loud enough to very quickly become very irritiating in an otherwise silent room. Putting the volume down to zero has no effect.

Overall, poor design, overly engineered menus, and annoying noises mean this one is never gonna help me get a good night's sleep. I've given up using mine after several months of annoyance and bought a Pure Siesta instead.

On this page you can look for suppliers of all types of portable DAB radio of different sizes and of different colours with such a wide choice of manufacturer. Portable DAB radios will keep your mind active when you are on your travels as you will be able to get the latest sports results, listen to music programs, keep up to date with the news, or just use it as an mp3 player before you get home. You will never lose touch and almost 90% of the UK gets good reception.

DAB Radio is pretty much weather resistant so it doesn’t matter whether it is sunny, raining or whatever you’ll always get a crystal clear reception with none of the hiss, fading and crackle found in normal radios. This is because it produces a digital signal from land based technology instead of satellite as in television. As there are now a lot of transmitters you should always be close to one.

These DAB radios today are lightweight and compact for you to carry with you but they are absolutely stylish enough to keep on any surface inside your home. If you stand them upright you can easily read what program you are listening to by looking at the clear LCD display. Also there are lots more programs than you can get on an ordinary radio.

Setting up the stations is not a challenge as normally they automatically tune themselves. There is no twiddling with dials to get a good reception, as soon as it picks up a signal that is it. its also lots simpler to make sure that you’re tuned into the channel you want as they are sorted by name rather than frequency so you will be able to see a name rather than a number and the display normally gives you information on the title and artist if you are on a music channel.

You can usually change a portable DAB radio to a personal one as you’ll find a jack socket where you can plug in an ear piece. This means you can comfortably listen whereever you are and not be a nuisance to anyone else near you.

The leading manufactures of radios have all brought out a DAB version and leading the way seem to be PURE, Roberts and Sony. Let’s have a look at some of the main ones.

One of the most popular is the PURE One DAB FM portable radio black which, as I write, sells for less than 50 pounds and its specification is excellent. This PURE ONE Classic has gained awards and is a DAB and FM radio that sounds fantastic, looks fantastic but more importantly is incredibly simple to use. It also has a timer for cooking to make life easier in the kitchen.

You can listen for up to forty hours without changing the battery, thus lowering the amount you have to pay and saves a bit of the environment. Alternatively 6 standard C size normal batteries will provide up to 80 hours of listening time.

It seems that Sony attack the micro system market more. The CMT-BX70DBi includes a built in iPod dock. Just plug it in to get a selection of the total range of digital pleasure as it also has a cd player, an mp3 player and the DAB radio has thirty stations preset. It even charges the iPod as you listen.

Roberts best selling model is the Ecologic-5 which is basically an alarm clock radio and it changes to a low power state when on standby and the radio is off and it just tells the time, then power up again if the alarm needs to go off. The Roberts Ecologic 5 has dual alarm mode so you can arrange for it to ring later on the weekend than in the week. You can also select whether the radio or buzzer wakes you up. The large screen of the ECO-5 is very readable, it displays the time and which program is on against a dimmable blue back light. There are also 10 station presets are on hand for your favourite radio stations.

As money is tight with the economy as it is now, we have just discussed the cheaper models that you can buy at present. Needless to say, you can pay much more if you have the money. Good luck in your search for your portable DAB radio.
